Happy GNU Year!

January 1st, 2010

gnu-year-2010

Welcome to 2010!

Up until now I’ve been so wrapped up in my new job that I’ve been too busy to post much of anything else. I have to prove my mettle and it has taken a great deal of my time. That said, I haven’t given up blogging. In fact, one of my resolutions for this year is to get back in the habit of blogging something each day. I know, from experience, that the process of searching and sharing helps me keep my mental toolbox of ideas well-stocked and ready for action.

To kick off the process, I’m going to suggest that all of my friends resolve to learn about, support, and use GNU resources when possible. By supporting GNU, we foster an intellectual environment that recognizes the importance of the freedom to

  • run a program, for any purpose
  • study how a program works, and adapt it to one’s needs
  • redistribute copies of a program so as to help others and
  • improve a program, and release improvements to the public, so that everyone benefits.

Note that I am NOT advocating the practice of pirating software. I am, however, suggesting that everyone use already existing, great, FREE software like that available on the GNU site.

Have a great year!

Free, Lively Images via Morguefile

July 8th, 2008

It’s a site that contains digital imagery that has been supplied by numerous photographers and artists around the world. What makes MorgueFile so appealing is that the images that reside there are high resolution and copyright free!

NECC 2008: Opening Up to Open Source

July 1st, 2008

Too cool!

Here I am in San Antonio, Texas at the Gonzalez Convention Center sitting in the Open Source Lab session listening to Steve Hargadon discuss free resources. I’ve heard Steve present before and, as always, it’s a pleasure to get access to his fresh ideas and opinions. This post–the one you’re reading–is being written on an old, IBM ThinkPad that has no harddrive. It’s a PC that’s part of a thin client network. There’s a room full of these normally useless, obsolete machines that are being used for blogging, word processing, multimedia, and other tasks. Imagine what might happen if a system or school decided to make better use of its old machines rather than tossing them out or surplusing them.

A World of Data to Explore: GE-Graph

June 23rd, 2008

Although it’s hard to believe, the wildly robust features of Google Earth can be made even better. Case in point: GE-Graph. This nifty, freeware application handily generates impressive graphs from kml files saved by Google Earth.
